Dr Owen is a specialist orthodontist in the Perth suburbs of Midland and Mount Lawley. Dr John Owen was President of the Dental Board of Western Australia from 1999 to 2010, past director of the Australian Dental Council, past President of the Australia Dental Association WA branch, Congress Chairman for the 33rd Australian Dental Association Congress and Exhibition, Perth 2009 and is an inaugural member of the newly established Dental Board of Australia, chairing the National Registration and Notification Committee. Dr Owen is Clinical Associate Professor, School of Primary, Aboriginal and Rural Health Care, University of WA and Regent, Section VIII, Australasian Section, of the International College of Dentists. He is a Fellow of the Academy Dentistry International and Pierre Fauchard Academy. Dr Owen and his wife Mrs Owen, have together established the volunteer, Kimberley Dental Team. Utilizing their helicopter for approximately 10 weeks a year, the Team serves Halls Creek and the remote desert communities of the East Kimberley with basic dental care and education. The Team has now grown to approximately 40 dental personnel and is preparing for its ninth trip. The Team is a proud recipient of support from Dental Health Services, University of Western Australia, HTC Sirona, McCusker Charitable Foundation, Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services and Colgate’s, Global Child Dental Health Taskforce and the Western Australian Branch of the Australian and New Zealand Society for Paediatric Dentistry. Mrs Owen is a Homoeopath, dental nurse and well known educator. Thankfully she is also a keen adventurer, enjoying flying to all corners of Australia and New Zealand. Together they have established the volunteer, Kimberley Dental Team. Although happy in the dental clinic, Mrs Owen’s skills are best in the area of community and aboriginal health worker liaison and communication, building relationships and solving problems. Her educational book “Strong teeth, Strong body, Strong mind” has now had over 30,000 copies distributed throughout the Kimberley, South West of Western Australia and most recently, into Western Australian prisons and the far northern “Cape” region of Australia.
